View Full Version : NEC Preempts
At the January 2006 OzOne "training camp", the squad decided to track what happens every time we preempt. The aim is to see what tactics work best over the long run. This thread will include all preempts from the NEC teams in early February.
Comments and suggestions will be invited.

If partner at thisvulnerability is likely to have
Kx
x
xxxx
109xxxx
(the hand that was opened 3C at fav vul more than once during camp), then you cannot afford to take action or even to go for the throat if they bid below game.

I would bid 3H - but I am not from the Trev school of preempts.

I think that I agree with Ron. I would pass and hope to go positive on the board. I certainly wouldn't be licking my lips if they got to some D contract
I am definitely a bidder and 3H seems like the bid that gives the best chance for the partnership to judge the rest of the auction. Needless to say I would be suprised and disappointed to find partner with no values. It will be interesting to see what information we get by tracking different styles of preempting. The bidding with no values style seems to rely on the 2 to 1 principle of two opponents and only one partner. At the same time it seems to deny partner the opportunity to do anything except in very rare cases.

this time the 3 hrt bidders have it, though i am not convinced that is the right action as opener need 3 good hrts.what should opener do if he held x-xx-xxx-aqxxxxx over the 3 hrt bid?
My partner must preempt with a stronger hand because I would bid 5C...... to make.
The Coach would like OzOne to track all our opening preempts, including weak artificial 2-bids. Match 1 at NEC started with this:

match 2 klinger neill.i would open 3 hrts may make it easier to get to 4 but the defence should prevail.

the first hand you provided that resulted in +1100 was a result due to the quality of your opposition
the second hand where the 7 card suit pre-empted showing 6 cards represents poor bridge by your partnership. The differnce between a 7th card v a 6th card in a suit is a trick. Failure to show appropraite length can be costly and in this casecost 10imps. Better to pass and show 7 cards later than to to show 6 and have 7
