At the club the other night I was playing with an unfamiliar (but strong-ish) partner. We were using MMM Splinters, not a method that I use often, and I picked up Qxx/Axxxx/Jxxx/x. Partner opened 1H. For anyone who uses this system, how do you bid my hand?

I didn't want to start with 4C as I didn't think that I was strong enough (give partner H KQJxx and the extra heart isn't worth much). I would have liked to bid 3C and then raise to 4H next time but was worried that partner may think that I was strong. Probably a strong hand would cue on the way up but I didn't want to take that chance, so in the interests of KISS, and partnership harmony, I just punted 4H. As it happens this was right, but I'm still not happy about it.

More generally, when you have a strong-or-weak option available, how do you bid to show a maximum of the weak one without exciting partner? For example playing Michaels 6-9 or 16+, or playing a 2D response to a GF 2C as 0-3 or 8+?

I believe that when you have two distinct ranges combined in the same bid, that the ranges should be wide enough that partner can base their bidding strategy on the assumption that you are in the lower range. If you happen to be in the higher bracket, you can then kick in comfort.

In the auction
1D - 1S
3C*
= either MEGA splinter or mini SPL.

Now we play 3D as a sort of game-try/inquiry.
Then
3S = minimum MIN SPL
3N = MEGA SPL
4X = natural, descriptive, decent hand within a MIN SPL.
