View Full Version : Handicapping
Hi Ian,
Any further developments re having the ability to handicap a std duplicate and swiss pairs event. When we run our handicap events we determine each pairs handicap from their annual average % relative to 50%. Ie if they average 55% we score up and deduct 5% off their score. Is there a possibility of programming this basic system into ASE8 whereby we could key in a negative or positive % which the system could take into account before final results produced(or round 1 results in swiss pairs to produce draw for round 2). Very basic but if it was available would make our handicap events much easier to run through ASe8 and Bridgemates. Might be pie in the sky but thought might be worth asking

Peter, you already have the ability to produce the handicapped results automatically with the CARDS ratings system. This is what ratings are all about.
See full details in
http://www.bridgecentral.com/Downloads/Using player ratings for your club.pdf
The relevant passage in the introduction reads:
The impact on a player?s rating is the real score in all events. So handicapped events should be dispensed with completely. The impact on a player?s rating shows his true performance within the event. In addition, organisers can use the rating-based seeding to make more equitable movements in events.
and further.....
Impact results and reports
When results of any session of bridge are published it is essential to include the rating?s impact. A pair that has come 3rd in the field, but has the highest impact, has effectively won the session. The impact on a players rating is the real score in all events.
Eliminate all handicapped events from your calendar. All events that are part of the ratings scheme have impact reports. Any pair can see how well they have done in the event, taking the strength of the field into account.

Ian, I have just come across this thread and have been looking at this issue.
It seems that when Impacts is selected the report does not show the full field. If Scores is selected then the full field is shown but in the same order as the standard session report with the Impacts included.
Can the report be modified to show all the Impacts?
Thanks
Neville
Neville I am not sure what you mean.
There are two reports for any session.
One is called "Session" and the other "Ratings".
These are the same except the ratings report includes impacts on ratings.

Hi Ian
Thanks for your reply - when I select the "Use Best Scores" box and click the Outright Scores Box I am presented with a Dialogue Box that has a number of options, one of which is to order by Scores or Impacts.
If Impacts is selected not all the field is listed (only 10 pairs out of a field of 35 in the example I have tested) - If Scores is selected all the field is listed but of course it is in Score order with the impact for each player in the right hand column.
It would be good if all the pairs could be shown on the impact report.
Also, with the Ratings Report it would also be good to have the option to be able to view this in "Impact" order. I have tried setting this to "Manual" in order to change it but it just shows a blank screen in this mode.
Regards
Neville
The "use best scores" is limited by many thing. Only those pairs with impacts are included, only those pairs that play in the number of sessions selected and those pairs that are in the first "n" places at the botom of the screen. Check those are not influencing your report.
Select "manual" on the report and right-click "change" and [open] a report of choice and select sort order 'partnershipratingadjustment' descending. Note this is an alpha sort so the positives are first, followed by negatives, both descending based on absolute values.

We are currently running our annual three session event and I want to use the Ratings Best Scores option to produce the outright winner.
The help file says the number of best scores that can be used must be less than the total number of sessions.
Is there a way around this?
Thanks]
Neville
The help file only referes to the [best results] option.
In "Use best scores" on the outright report you can enter the total number of sessions in the event (any more than that is not much use :))

Many thanks Ian
Should we select the "Average the Score Option" and which of the three "Tally this Score type" are appropriate for producing the correct handicap result?

Average only helps when the "raw score" is used. Otherwise is does very little.
The best is to use the "% Field stength adjusted" as this is fairest when you use Mitchell movements but want to compare NS and EW. Also is fairest between sessions where the field strength varies a lot.
