Parramatta Bridge Club have just purchased ASE 8 on a CD. I have loaded it onto my personal computer (Win XP) but it will not open any of the Movements menu items except Standard. Our treasurer has loaded it onto two of his computers and it works OK, but since I will be using it and instructing the other directors in its use I will need a usable copy.
Any ideas?
PS. I have now loaded it onto the Club laptop (also XP) and so far it works OK, except on opening, after the initial screen I get a completely black screen except for a small white box in the top left hand corner and another that follows the mouse. On pressing Alt Tab, ASE 8 appears and two active programs are indicated at the bottom of the screen - ASE 8 and ASE007 (in the ASE 8 directory). At the moment this is only an annoyance, but I would prefer to get rid of it.
The first thing to do is apply the latest service pack.
It is on the CD or at:

Thanks, Ian.
I have loaded the latest update on both machines with no change to their behaviour. On the club computer, after the logo screen I get a flash of the initial ASE 8 screen before the black ASE007 screen appears.
On both computers I have imported both a Mitchell and Howell event from ASE7 and they re-scored correctly.
However on my computer I still can't get the Howell, User or Individual movement or VP Scales screens to appear. (When I click on the appropriate box there is no reaction).
It certainly sounds like they are not installed correctly.
see [help][about]
Should show 1.0.85.0 servicve pack 85
Also the date on ASEScorer_8.exe should be 29/4/2010 at 1:25 am

I have checked the version number and update number in [help] [about] and they are as you say. Also the date and time on ASEScorer_8.exe are correct.
On my home computer, whenever I try to access the Howell movements etc. I get another entry in ASEError.log. For example:
HW open 35 ASE51 01
HW open 35 ASE51 01
VP open 35 ASE50 01
US open 35 ASE53 01
The last (US) if I try to access User or Individual movements.
This supports the statement that the scorer is not installed correctly
Error 35 means the file does not exist of the path does not exist.
C:\Program Files\ASEComputing\ASE Scorer 8\masters or similar should contain user.mvt, howell.mvt and indiv.mvt files.
Uninstall using control panel remove
See http://www.asecomputing.com/installation.htm (http://www.asecomputing.com/forums/../installation.htm)
and uninstall completely and install again.

This is my second installation (the first was removed according to the instructions given in the web site) and the same problem arose. The masters directory contains the following:
Directory of C:\Program Files\ASEComputing\ASE Scorer 8\masters

23/05/2010 11:19 AM <DIR> ..

The problem must be in my computer. Perhaps I should revert to an earlier back-up and try again.
Sunday 5.30 pm
I have just reverted to an earlier backup of my computer and reloaded Firebird 2, ASE 8 and Service Pack 85, but still no joy with the movement menus.
The above files are again present in the masters directory. It did take three goes to register the program due to my typing errors, but I guess that would not affect it.
Are you still getting the 35 errors?
Have you applied the latest service pack?
Can you get to [system][VP scales] option?

I have applied Service Pack 85.
On trying to access Howell, User, Individual, and VP Scales from the Movements screen I still get the following errors:
HW open 35 ASE51 01
US open 35 ASE52 01
US open 35 ASE53 01
VP open 35 ASE50 01
If I try to access VP scales from the System menu I get the same VP open error again. The Standard and MP rules screens come up OK from the Movements screen.
I need to look at this closer.
Check your messages.
This was solved and we suspect the virus checker.

ASE8 now works fine on my computer - thanks.
I have now loaded ASE8 onto a new club notebook computer (an ACER Aspire), and while it does work OK, the computer has been crashing occasionally. This was inconvenient during play, especially while using Bridgemates.
I have been back to ACER and eliminated any hardware faults, so it must be software related. The computer has been restored to its factory settings and seems stable now, but before reloading the software I would like to find the possible culprit.
The computer is a 64 bit laptop using Windows 7. Is there a possibility that any of the programs associated with ASE8, Firebird, and Bridgemates could have problems with this computer?
It is hard to be sure.
Check with bridgemate too.
The thing I would highly recommend is not to use the continuous reading of the scores from the database. Use F8 and Ctrl-F8 in preference. If you are doing this already I have no other suggestions.
